To learn more about sheet music, I recommend that you understand the timing in measures. Time signatures tell you how many beats there are in a measure.
First you should understand the different types of notes and how long they are held. This is because rests work the same way; each has a different count in how long the silence is.
I don’t believe that this is crucial when learning a song from sheet music. Dots and tie notes influence a notes count, but it is very difficult to tell a real difference when playing. Of course, a professional piano player must know everything when it comes to the sheets.
